We're Adam and Barton. We run a product studio in NYC called Handheld Projects. We spend our days building slow products for easy living, with a focus on great ideas that have eroded over time.
Nope! Email is too sensitive and important to put all of our trust in robots. We've spent two years building North with generous help from others. Our team is very senior, clocking up decades of experience at companies like Apple, Meta, Spotify and GitHub.
Our company doesn't have access to your emails. North is built using Google's own services. You can think of North like a remote control for your Gmail account. The app on your phone securily connects to Gmail's "API" to download mail, mark an email as unread, or search for something. Unlike many email apps, we don't store a copy of your mail in the cloud and we don't send it to any third-party service for AI processing. Everything happens between your phone and Gmail, just like the official Gmail app. This is all by design to keep your emails private and secure. Every year, Google reviews our app to certify us as a trusted developer. We are CASA Tier 2 certified.
No. The app won't delete your emails unless you take the action to do so, and our five channels won't reconfigure your entire Gmail inbox—they just determine how your mail is organized in North. To save you time and effort, some emails can automatically be marked as read or archived after you see them, but you control those options in Settings.

During our early-access period, North is available for free. We also offer paid tiers which give you further access and perks. We're still working out pricing for our AppStore release. Offering North as a premium, paid product allows us to support customers for years to come. We are a small business who are not beholden to the whims of venture capitalists.
